The main difference to the previous SingStar editions is that the karaoke application itself can be downloaded free of charge. However, it is not possible to use it (outside of a few short sample songs) without buying songs via micro-transaction.

While it is still possible to use an old microphone which was sold together with previous SingStar editions, it is designed to be used with a smartphone. By downloading an external application (compatible with Android or iOS), it becomes a microphone.
